Virginia Retta Walters was born in Belmont, Illinois on August 31, 1921, the sixth and last child of John Wesley & Dollie (Miller) Walters. She attended grade school at Belmont and was a 1939 graduate of Monmouth High School. She married J. Henry Ewing on August 31, 1940 in Little York, Illinois. He died May 25, 1995.
Virginia was a farm girl who moved easily into the role of traditional farm wife and mother to three children. She was an active member of the Center Presbyterian Church and was a devout Christian who often shared her faith with her family.
Her interests were many and varied. An avid lifelong reader, she enjoyed fiction romance, especially her daughter-in-law’s books. When her vision failed she spent hours listening to books on tape. When younger she enjoyed bowling and golf, playing countless rounds with family and friends at Gibson Woods. Tolura Acord, her daughter-in-law’s mother, introduced her to painting in her middle years and she developed her own distinctive style. A lifelong nature lover, she cultivated her flower gardens with great care and could identify many birds by their sounds. Hunting mushrooms with her sister Margaret was a particular delight. She also had a passion for bridge, belonging to several clubs and playing many a deal with her sisters and family. Through fading eyesight she remained a passionate player through the final deal.
Virginia was a devoted wife to Henry for 54 years, enjoying summers at Lake Warren and many winters in Arizona with family and friends. She was a loving mother and grandmother and her gentle presence was truly an inspiration to all who knew her.
Virginia is survived by a daughter Joyce (Roy) Olson of Appleton, WI; sons: George W. (Susan A.) Ewing and Ivan L. (Susan D.) Ewing, both of Seaton; Grandchildren: Albert Olson, Erica West, Matt Ewing, Britt Hagens, Justin Ewing and Gabriel Ewing; 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a devoted niece, Cheryl Peterson among many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Pearl Levine, Geneva Welch, Estella Hultgren, Margaret Campbell and a brother John Walters.
