Verna M. DeClerck, 93 of Aledo, died April 11, 2023 at Avonlea Cottage, Milan, Illinois. Funeral services are Monday, April 17th at 11:00 AM at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo with visitation prior to services beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Catherine's Catholic Church or the Mercer County Historical Society.
Verna Marie was born on April 18, 1929, to Earl & Ruth (Whitehall) Hampton in rural Rock Island County. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1947 and started working as a bookkeeper at the Rock Island Argus. On September 16, 1950 she married Charles DeClerck in Milan, Illinois. They moved to their first farm in 1956 and had three children, Joann, Donna and Steve.
Verna was a hardworking farm wife and homemaker. She served as 4-H leader for Perryton Peps and was on the Home Extension Committee. Verna was an avid quilter and baker, receiving many awards at quilt shows and the Rhubarb Festival. Friends, neighbors and family all enjoyed the fruits of her labor.
Verna and Chuck loved to dance and traveled the midwest to polka dances and Polka Mass. She worked several years on family genealogy and volunteered at the Essley Noble Museum. She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church.
Verna is survived by her children: Joann (George) Soper, Donna (Larry Martin)Lloyd, Steve (Cathy) DeClerck; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters: Elaine Rommel, Joyce Hill and Janet Brinkman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Don and John Hampton and sisters: Mary Cameron And Delores Anderson.
The family would especially like to thank Avonlea Cottage for the special care given to Verna.
