Laura Gowdy

Laura Ellen Gowdy, beloved sister-in-law and cherished aunt, 96 of Aledo, IL passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15th. She will be remembered for her deep love of reading, unwavering generosity, and profound love for her family.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 24th at 10:00 AM at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, 606 SE 3rd Street, Aledo, IL. Private burial was held in Aledo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice in Laura's honor.

 Laura was born at home on the family farm, North of Joy, IL on November 28th, 1927 to Joe and Cora Gowdy. She graduated from Roseville High School in 1945, and Monmouth College in 1949. She taught high school for several years while obtaining two masters degrees. In 1956 she was part of the Fulbright program where she taught English in Holland. After returning, Laura began a career at Illinois State University where she dedicated herself to a career as a librarian. Her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others were evident in everything she did.

Outside of work, Laura had a deep love for gardening, photography and playing old hymns. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews, whom she adored. She cherished the time spent rocking and singing to the new babies.  She was a member of First Presbyterian in Normal, IL  where she was the clerk of session for many years.  After moving to Aledo, she joined College Avenue Presbyterian Church.  

 Those left to cherish Laura’s memory include her sister-in-law, Leitha Gowdy, nephew, Doug (Theresa) Gowdy, nieces, Denise Clark and Anne Gowdy, 10 great-nieces and nephews, 25 great-great nieces and nephews, and lovingly expecting a great-great-great niece in June. Laura was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Robert & Billy Joe, and nephew, Michael Clark.
