Funeral Services for Maxine Newswander, 80, of Aledo, will be Friday at 11:00 AM at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Burial will be in the Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 to 11 AM on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church, Aledo. Maxine died on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Maxine Mae was born on July 26, 1925 in Mercer County, Illinois to Lee & Mergie Mae (Spence) Smith. She married Joseph L. Newswander on September 12, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1989. Maxine was a devoted homemaker, but also did upholstery from her home in partnership with her sister-in-law, Jean Young. She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and Fighting Illini Fan. She also enjoyed crocheting, baking and many crafts. He pride and joy were her grandchildren and she enjoyed attending their school activities. Maxine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Bill & Pat Newswander of Aledo; a sister and brother-in-law: Emma Lee & Edwin Relander, Jr.; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter and 2 son-in-laws, George Unsworth of Aledo and Ron Darwin of Big Island.. She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 daughters; Evelyn Unsworth and Sandra Darwin and a granddaughter, Debra Ann Klossing.
