A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen E. Bopp, 93 of Aledo, will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Aledo. Private burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Speer Funeral Home. A luncheon will be served from 12-2 at St. Catherine's Church Hall. Memorials may be made to the Aledo American Legion or the Mercer County Historical Society.
Helen died on Friday, January 3, 2014 at Genesis Senior Living, Aledo.
Helen was born on June 14,, 1920 in Eliza Township to Joseph & Rachel (Lingafelter) Garmer. Celebrating her birthday on Flag Day was very important to Helen and she held the American Flag in highest regard. She married Francis Bopp on June 28, 1938 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Keithsburg. He preceded her in death on September 23, 1996.
Helen was a dedicated School Bus Driver for Headley Bus Service, retiring in 1989 after 21 years of service. She also helped Francis on the family farm in Mercer Township.
Helen was a member of the Mercer County Prime Timers (Farm Bureau); was the first Senior Regent of the Aledo Moose Lodge; Past President of the Eliza American Legion Auxiliary; Member of the 8 and 40 of Milan, Lifetime member of the Essley-Noble Museum, Aledo and at long time member of the Aledo Support Group.
Helen is survived by her children and spouses: Linda & Gail Morrow and Lois & John Retherford all of Joy and Lynn & Mary Bopp of Estes Park, CO; Grandchildren: Elizabeth & Sam Patterson; Joseph & Amy Morrow; Melinda & Josh Galbreath; Amanda & Will Heinrichs and Andrew and Eric Retherford; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great- grandchild and a brother, Alan & Shirley Garmer of Miller, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Joseph Leslie Garmer and a granddaughter, Tamara Sue Morrow.
