Mabel Mayhew, 91 of Aledo, died Wednesday, January 2, 2012 at the Mercer County Nursing Home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Burial will be in Hamlet Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Historical Society or the Mercer Carnegie Library.
Mabel was born on December 27, 1921 in Muscatine, Iowa to Ernest E. & Helen K. (Wray) LeQuatte. She married Ralph E. Mayhew on September 21, 1945 in Illinois City, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1992.
Mabel was a 1939 graduate of Muscatine High School and received her Assistant of Arts Degree in Education from Western Illinois University. She taught in Drury Township; Rock Island and Mercer County Schools. She also was Secretary for the College Avenue Presbyterian Church for 14 years and for Mer-Roc FS, INC, for 12 years, retiring in 1983.
Mabel was a member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church; Mercer County YMCA; Illinois and Blackhawk Genealogical Societies and on the Board of Directors for the Mercer County Historical Society. She enjoyed reading and was a devoted grandmother.
Those left to cherish Mabel’s memory include her children and spouses: Cathryn & Rick Haun of Shawnee, KS; Edward & Diane Mayhew of Colona, IL; 3 grandchildren: Gretchen Mortier, Eric Haun and Meghan Haun; a sister, Dorothy DeMers, Modesto, CA; and a brother, Ernest LeQuatte of Herrin, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Edward and her husband, Ralph.
