William G. Comben, 90, of Windsor Manor in Webster City, IA died at 9:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at Windsor Manor on Saturday – June 25 at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will be in the Aledo Cemetery in Aledo, Illinois on June 27 at 11:00 AM. Military Honors will be conducted by the Mercer County VFW Post #1571.
Born November 25, 1920 in St. Mary's, Missouri he was the son of Robert William and Katharine (Wilson) Comben. On June 27, 1944 he married Lena Marie Brown in Aledo, Illinois. First Lieutenant Comben served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-17 pilot.
He was an officer in various banks and financial institutions throughout his career and retired in 1990. After retirement he remained active in the Episcopal Church. He was a volunteer for SCORE. He worked for the Census Bureau. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a dedicated reader and life long learner. Bill was involved with the PTA and Music Boosters at Maine Township High School East, Park Ridge IL & a life long member and supporter of the Boy Scouts.
Survivors include: son W. Eric (Elizabeth) Comben of Kennewick, WA; daughter Sue (Jim) Heerema of Webster City, IA; grandchildren Evan Comben, Erin Comben, Jennifer Heerema, Matthew (Nancy) Heerema, & Jessica (Seth) Heerema Minnihan; great grandchildren Elena, Kate, and Anna Heerema; American Field Service Foreign Exchange Student Roar (Solveig) Wedding (& his children Iselin and Eivand) of Trogstad, Norway, two sisters, Helen May Merrick of Amity, OR, Mary Lou Herndon of Kearney, MO, sisters-in-law Pauline Brown West of Cedar Falls, IA & Audrey Brown of Aledo, IL and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister Ruth (Comben) Cook, one brother Robert Comben. He was a life long friend of George (deceased) and Helen (100 yrs old and counting) Watkins.
